Knock Shrine to host Advent series of talks on Synodality

Knock Shrine has announced a series of Advent talks on the theme of Synodality which will take place on Thursday evenings during the month of December.

The talks will be offered by Father Eamonn Conway, Head of Theology & Religious Studies, MIC, University of Limerick and Julie Kavanagh, Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.  As the initial phase of the Synodal Pathway for the Catholic Church in Ireland is now underway, these talks will offer the opportunity for discussion and reflection to help deepen our understanding of this important subject.

The talks will be available in the St John’s Rest and Care Centre at Knock Shrine and will also be offered online at www.knockshrine.ie/watch-live.

The schedule of talks is as follows:

  • Thursday 2 December Fr Eamonn Conway –  Synodality: What does it mean?
  • Thursday 9 December Julie Kavanagh – Synodality: How does it work?
  • Thursday 16 December Fr Eamonn Conway – Synodality: Why does it matter?

The story of Knock began on the 21 August 1879 when Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist appeared at the south gable of Knock Parish Church.  This miraculous silent apparition was witnessed by fifteen people, young and old.  Knock is an internationally recognised Marian Shrine and was visited by Pope Saint John Paul II in 1979 as part of his apostolic pilgrimage, and in 2018 by Pope Francis as part of the celebrations in Ireland for the IX World Meeting of Families. On 19 March 2021, Pope Francis officially recognised Knock as an International Marian Shrine through the Pontifical Council for New Evangelisation.
